Art or Makeup?
Artist Andy Alcala, a student at the University of Iowa, wanted to put a fresh face on classic artworks of the past...or should I say, he wanted to put the artworks on a fresh face? In his "Face Artists" series, he explores the concept of accepting art at its face value quite literally by painting the immediately recognizable works of legends such as Van Gogh, Warhol, Munch and Pollock on his own face, then taking self portraits.
The series makes us view these famous works in an entirely new light and marvel at the fact that they can remain so relevant after so long. Still, the question remains—is Alcala's work art, makeup or both?
