I’m growing to love our Birmingham office. Yesterday, we ended the workday with a meeting at the local lanes. This must be a weekly tradition; President Will Pearson and Chief Art Direction Officer Winslow Taft were far too prolific to not be regulars.

We almost weren’t allowed to bowl. “It gets really busy on league night,” we were told. I took this photo an hour later…

If mental_floss had a bowling team, Winslow would be captain. Plus he’d design some great bowling shirts. We could sell replicas in our store.

Editor-in-chief Neely Harris will be writing next month’s Letter from the Editor about navigating the dreaded 7-10 split.

Despite being in obvious pain, Mangesh put up a 155. A Kirk Gibsonian effort.

Will is known as “The Closer” for a reason. Not even a charging Winslow could slow him down.

Afterwards, we had a wonderful dinner at the Pearson family estate. All in all, a great day. And I learned an important lesson: one of the internships we need to offer is that of bowling consultant. We’ll start accepting applications later this week.

  1. I’m going to go ahead and give a thumbs-up to the bowling shirt idea. I’d definitely be a buyer!!

  2. I’ll be sending in an application for the bowling consultant internship - my mom used to take lessons, and I got to sit in on a lot of them. Clearly this means I am qualified, though I will have to keep telling you all to do as I say, not as I do.

  3. By the age of 12 I was a bowling prodigy. I had every record and trophy that could be had in the junior league. Then they installed a Mario Brothers arcade game thus began the decline of promising bowling career. I am no longer addicted to Mario Brothers and am willing to be your king pin seeker.

  4. ooo nice form, winslow!

i know he’ll never read this so why do i post it?

glad youre enjoying the office here…what you dont know (mango + jason) is that every time i go by the office they have a sign up that says “out to lunch bowl”

seriously. they are never there. i wonder how winslow would bowl with the Hulk-Hands on.

  5. Let me know when you guys are hiring. This is so much cooler than my job…

  6. Ummm Wow that looks exactally like a bowling alley next to my house in Countryside Illinois….Rolling Lanes! let me know…

  7. Umm…is that an Elmo’s Diner t-shirt?

  8. Elmo’s it is. Good eye.

And in case you can’t read Mangesh’s shirt, it says “DELAWARE. small wonder.”

  9. NICE DELAWARE SHIRT, MANGESH!!

  10. I live in Birmingham and i must admit it is odd to see the bowling alley .5 miles from my house on my bored-at-work-read-everything site…hmm maybe a sign i should be working instead for the bowlers at mentalfloss. and i wouldnt even have to move. and i did take bowling in college, although i’ll admint my skills havent improved much. I’m still terrible.
