13 Works of Art Made in Rice Fields
by David K. Israel - September 30, 2011 - 11:22 AM

This is why we love you, Internet! My post on odd foods eaten in Japan that I published earlier this week led me to these gorgeous photos of artworks created in Japanese rice fields. Scroll down to see their take on the Mona Lisa, plus some close ups so you can see how the images are actually created.

Below is a detail of one of the images so you can see how they are made. Pretty awesome!

  1. SO much cooler than crop circles…

Are these fields still planted by hand? Those are very creative farmers.

I’m willing to bet the people who plant the rice probably don’t own the fields…

  2. Gorgeous! The attention to detail in some of them is amazing.

  3. awesome! and totally interesting! it looks several varities of rice planted to make these designs…

  4. Hooray for Doraemon!

  5. are they painting the fields or planting different varieties of rice to make the images?

  6. they are just painting the fields. If you see the last image, it shows you how it’s done.

  7. This takes place each year in Inakadate, Japan. The rice is not painted. Several different grains of rice are planted in the spring. This year’s art included red, white, yellow, and black varieties. You can see the field from atop the pagoda-shaped tower at their city hall building.
