And according to my internet research, the technology existed in 1984 to identify individuals based on their DNA, and it was first used in a court room in 1985, but from what I read, and what I remember myself, the public didn't know much about it until the early-mid 90's. (the OJ trial apparently had an impact) I mean they only finished mapping the human genome in 2000. I don't think that the premise would work today... But it worked back then.
