How about the rivalry between Tycho Brahe and the person who cut his nose off, leaving him to wear a silver nose for the rest of his life. He was a fascinating man. He kept a pet elk that died when it fell down the stairs after becoming intoxicated. He really knew how to throw a party.

Newton – Leibniz rivalry is my pick (although it’s not from the artistic domain)

Newton went to all lengths to discredit Leibniz’s work. The results of a committee formed by the Royal Society to investigate this are mostly considered to be written by Newton himself.

Tesla versus Edison would be tops on my list. Edison did a lot to keep Tesla down, and sadly, far more people know about Edison than Tesla. Some of Tesla’s experiments still cannot be duplicated by today’s scientists.

Another story of “the Last Supper” goes that the head monk of the Santa Maria Delle Gracie badgered Da Vinci about wrapping it up, so Da Vinci threatened to use him as the model for Judas.
My favorite “feud” story involves Lawrence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman, during the filming of “Marathon Man.” Hoffman arrived for a demanding scene looking awful. He explained to Olivier that he’d been up for two days to look that way. Olivier simply said, “My dear boy, you wouldn’t have to go through all that if you’d just learn to ACT!”

Sorry Witty Nickname, I don’t believe the thing you wrote about Da Vinci and The Last Supper. When I was a child a similar apocryphal story circulated that Leonardo painted Jesus first and then searched for years to find someone whose appearance would betray a dark heart, when he found a perfect model he finished the painting and the model burst into tears. Supposedly they were the same person. This turned out not to be true, but many pastors and church people past it on.

Leonardo DaVinci had a public rivalry with a fellow artist. When he was painting “The Last Supper” he painted in his rivals face as Judas so he could be remembered forever as the betrayer of Christ.

However DaVinci could not paint the face of Christ. IT was not until he repainted the face of Judas and forgave his rival that he could express the face of Jesus.
