One other thing about the Maurice Richard riot was that the game was against Detroit, and was forfeited (still the only one in NHL history, as far as I know.) Detroit ended up beating Montreal for first place in the league (those were the six-team days) by two points. They then played each other in the finals, and the home team won every game, which meant that Detroit won 4-3. So even without the Rocket, the Habs might have won the Cup if it hadn’t been for the riot.

AS Roma and Lazio have had some pretty intense rivalry games, including one where a group of fans somehow managed to get a Vespa past security, and heaved it at opposing fans.

The ‘Disco Sucks’ riot actually happened at Comiskey Park in Chicago…sorry, had to be a know-it-all.

What about the infamous “DISCO SUCKS” riot before a Cleveland Indians game back in the early 80s. Cleveland had to forfeit the game (can’t remember the last time that happened in baseball).

At least as a footnote, the “Football War” between Honduras and San Salvador in July 1969 should be mentioned. What started out as a “rolling riot” as each nation hosted quals for the 1970 World Cup, turned into a real war between them one month later. With 1000’s civilians killed and 100000’s made homeless before the ceasefire 5 days later, surely this can be considered the most protracted “most terrifying sports riot” ever.

The riot at the Red Star Belgrade vs. PAOK Thessaloniki game looks way out of control. I have never seen a riot like this at a basketball game. This makes the Pacers vs Pistons riot look like nothing.

Man, most of these aren’t riots. They’re little scuffles at sporting events. Riots are when things go up in flames, the army is called in and people die.

I don’t understand how a 5 day riot where armies had to come in and kill 30,000 people in Constantinople doesn’t get #1?

If there is one thing Filipinos are passionate about, it is definitely basketball. College basketball, even more so. I’m not sure on the exact details, but a riot in the 1980-1981 Philippine NCAA Championship game led to it being played in an empty arena, much like the storied Inter Milan franchise mentioned above.
