Degas has a niche with families who are into dance. Many young girls take ballet, or other dances, and I'm certain that drives much of the interest.

its funny how he can paint such beautiful paintings of such ugly ideas.

I am so happy you featured Degas & this piece! He has always been my favorite. I've danced since I was young, & he captures the feelings of a dancer so beautifully & accurately! Thank you for brightening my day!

monet (not manet) was also nearly blind - i have a pet theory that the impressionists weren't so much visionaries as much as they were nearsighted.

Do we know who the dance instructor is? I've often wondered whether he was someone well-known. I agree with the previous coments... Degas's work is beautiful, and the post provides some fun facts. Merci encore!

Good article - nice job tying it in to the Nutcracker anniversary. It's intriguing to think of one of the founding fathers of Impressionism arguing for himself as a Realist. I also had no idea he dabbled in photography - very interesting!

Definitely one of my favorite artists. I'm gaga over this one, particularly interesting is the girl on the left who is scratching her back. Little details like that make me smile.
