Just say snow

Looking through the wintery archives at the always-terrific Cellar, I stumbled into this great photo. The shot is of more than 8,900 people setting a snow angel record in North Dakota a little over 10 months ago. What’s most stunning about it though isn’t that so many folks gathered for the event, but that the people of Bismarck hope this will change public perception of the place. According to a USA Today piece:

Edna Arvidson, 84, of Bismarck, said she participated in the city’s [previous] record setting event in 2002. “It’s fun and puts us on the map,” Arvidson said. “People think there’s nothing going on up here.”

Edna makes a good point. I guess most people just don’t know about Bismarck’s legendary Super Slide Amusement Park.

  1. People might make fun of them but I say any event that involves 8,900 people and one of them is NOT Paris Hilton is worth reporting.

  2. Let me just say this: most of the people in North Dakota are the nicest people you will ever meet.

    /There’s always a few dicks. Overall, though…

  3. Definitely! I published the pic because I thought it was really fun sounding. I’m keen to visit and see what Bismarck’s actually like.

  4. Bismarck(and the entire state) is SOOOO COOOOOLD!!! I lived there and I still have family members there. The people are nice and crime is low. I went back to visit family awhile back. I went with one of my cousins to see other relatives and he parked his car on the street and left his keys in the ignition and left the door unlocked. I asked him if he was insane but he said everybody does that. And after our rather long visit, there was his car, undisturbed.

  5. Actually, if you get out your magnifying glass and look to the right of the statue near the back, you will see me (along with the rest of my family, my boss and his family, etc.) in the crowd. We moved up here five years ago and LOVE it — easy commute, enough “city” stuff to keep me happy and enough nature close by to keep my husband happy. Yes, it gets cold, but we avoid almost all of the awful ice storms that hit further south and east. And yes, people really do leave their cars unlocked here!
