An Incomplete and Debatable List of things you should know about Walt Disney

Sure, you know old Walt from Mickey Mouse, Disneyland, Walt Disney World and basically any animated film that didn’t go straight to video, but how much do you really know about this American genius? Here’s a fact list with just a few of our favorite things

1. The Specs

Height: 5’ 10″
Eyes: dark brown
Star Sign: Sagittarius, born Dec. 5, 1901
(Our) Favorite Quote: “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”

2. Turn-ons:

juice-tomato.jpgAnimals (he had a poodle, which he fed steak), flying (he used his twin-engine planes to fly over Disneyland), and Republicans. He also loved tomato juice so much that he served it to everyone who came to his office, and got angry if they didn’t accept it.

3. Turn-offs:

Wrinkles (he had ‘em airbrushed off his promotional pics), criticism (he once threw an Oscar at his brother’s head when he doubted him), and unions (he thought they were part of a Communist plot against him).

4. Hobbies

Disney tried to take up golf when his doctor recommended he learn to relax, but he became consumed with perfecting his game. He’d get up at 4:30 a.m. to play a round before work every day, which ended up adding to his stress.

5. Favorite Creation

fullbody_final.jpgThough he always had trouble drawing Mickey (he used to take lessons from his animators), Disney once said, “I love Mickey Mouse more than any woman I’ve ever known.”

6. Favorite Hiding Place

Walt had a tiny apartment built for himself in Disneyland above the Main Street fire station so he could be close to his creation … even in his sleep.

7. Favorite Pastime

He walked around Disneyland with a little blue notepad (no one else in the company was allowed to use one like it) and left detailed notes about potential improvements.

LDisney.jpg8. True Romance (Why he married his wife)

According to legend, the young Disney married his secretary, Lillian Bounds, because he couldn’t afford to pay her $15-a-week salary.

9. Disney as a Sleeping Beauty

Disney had little interest in music. During the production of “Fantasia,” he purchased season tickets to a local symphony, but invariably fell asleep during performances.

10. Tricks of the Trade

As a boy, Disney won talent competitions for his impressions of Charlie Chaplin, and he often encouraged animators to act out scenes before putting them to paper. At one meeting in preparation for “Snow White,” he acted out the entire movie, playing all the parts himself. This performance served as the guide for all creative questions on the film.

11. But…

Despite his knack for caricature, Disney had a poor sense of humor and was supposedly pretty unfunny.

  1. Can’t believe you didn’t include Trains as o ne of Walt’s turn ons. He had his own scaled down version that ran through his yard and he loved to engineer it. (Why do you think trains are such a big part of WDW and DL?)

  2. I cant believe you didn’t put the jews in his turn offs…he was a racist antisemetic jerk wad… but ya gotta love that mickey, i guess…

  3. Ditto about the antisemitism. But I disagree about having to love Mickey. I’ve never enjoyed Disney stuff.

  4. we have the same birthday
    thats cool

  5. and according to robot chicken, after disney died he had his head cut off with a chainsaw and placed on a robot body, only to awake with an undying hunger for Cuban children.

i’ve always had neutral feelings towards mickey mouse. never loved him; never hated him.

AND.. cute fun-fact- he and my boyfriend share the same birthday!

  6. I was never a fan nor hated Disney, I’m neutral about the whole Disney “empire”.

I was on the website of a guy whose father worked for Disney. One of the stories someone submitted was from a jewish guy who worked at Disneyland many years ago. He told how Walt Disney visited where he worked, chatted with him, was very friendly even though the guy was wearing a yarmulka(sp?) and has what he said is an “extremely jewish name.” So he thinks the antisemitism story is false.

  7. My Husband hates what he calls “Disney’s evil empire” as well but my Grandpa, Aunt and Uncle all worked for Disney at one time (I grew up in Burbank, Ca where the disney studios are) and we went every summer. I have nothing but warm fuzzy feelings for Disneyland etc.. Another Walt fact is that his middle name is Elias which was also shared by my Grandfather who worked for the company.
