Oddly enough, sandwich loaf is popular in my neck of the woods (which I will not disclose in order to protect the poor fools who like it). The key seems to be good sandwich spread.

Jello, as any good Lutheran knows, is an art form. However, olives or cheddar cheese is just weird.

I have never laughed so hard in my entire life. As a child of the fifties, I do remember the spam & whatever's handy meals. Thank Heavens that my mother did not attempt to go beyond that in her culinary creativity. In a moment of temporary insanity, my dad probably would have fled with us to my grandfather's place in the country where brains scrambled with eggs were the "healthy" breakfast fare.

I knew it was time to leave Wisconsin when my then mother-in-law served a Christmas dinner of burned ham (cinders floated out of the oven) canned yams, seven kinds of Jell-O molds, and half the inventory of O&H bakery.

My high school chemistry teacher had a book called "The Twinkie Cookbook". One was a pure twinkie wedding cake (it will still be fresh in time for the divorce). then came a section called twinkies and chocolate. Then came twinkies and meat. the two worst were twinkie stuffed turkey, and twinkie meatloaf.

Thanks for the laughs! Having grown up in the 70's I ate many of these dishes; dinner was always an adventure in keeping a straight face while feeding the dog under the table. A skill fortunately my children will never have to learn eating happy meals.

Bone marrow you can get from soup bones purchased from your local butcher and boiling them all day to make broth. Then scrape the marrow out of the bones and serve on saltine crackers.

My favorite (not) jello creation mixed pinapple chunks, and cheddar cheese cooked up into a sauce of some kind then added to orange jello and marshmallows.

Oh my god, I've been looking at terrible food recipes for hours today and I think yours are the absolute worst. I have a salad book from the 1940s that calls for "sweetbreads on iceberg lettuce, topped with olives."
Have you ever encountered "Perfection Salad" in your journey? Think gelatine and shredded carrots, for starters.

We used to have jello with fruit all the time (if you got half a maraschino cherry you felt like you won a prize). But not with carrots or olives or any other non-fruit vegetation. Ew! WWII wives learned to make casseroles--good hearty dishes with you-name-it in them that could feed a whole family very cheaply. Some of them even taste good.
