Alma-Tadema's earnings must have been pretty healthy for him to afford having those roses shipped in! I agree with Fign, the info about Heliogabalus is fascinating, but it does lead one to wonder how much is embellishment... after all, the kid only had about 4 years to wreak all that havoc, and I suppose he had to do an occasional official thing or two. Or maybe being perverse and decadent was the only job description for Roman emperors at the time. Anyway, Andréa, keep it coming! Wow, this painting is amazing.
