In high school, there was a kid in my spanish class who was from Bulgaria. One day, towards the end of the class, my teacher was talking to some students (including the Bulgarian student) about accents, and the variations of spoken english. Now, I had been sitting in a corner reading, but when I heard this, I screamed and started shouting excitedly about the history of spoken english and showed them the book I was reading...on the history of linguistics and the english language.

I was 15 at the time, but I believe I'd do the same thing today.

Hmmmm.... where could I begin? I was in band; I constantly babble about National Geographic-y; science-y, history-y subjects; I read and watch educational stuff for fun; I gave my 8th grade "graduation" speech; I had my hair cut like a boy (finally grew out of that when i was like 10); my favorite TV show is Planet Earth. But the thing is- I could care less. I'd rather be known as a "nerd" and feel totally comfortable, than living a lie. Life's short. You can only be yourself once.

My son, who is six, recently got into Star Wars so I have found myself discussing issues in all of the movies and of the characters with my son. Don't forget that I have to play lightsabers at least twice a week also :-(

My friends and I play on a crappy little softball team and I picked the number 97 for my jersey because it was the largest prime number available. You know, more secure than a 13 or 17 in the event I got attacked by crackers.

But that was my previous jersey. My current jersey's number is pi. I wanted to use phi instead because it's more beautiful than pi, but phi is just a bit too obscure for most people to understand. But everyone loves pi.

That previous sentence was pretty nerdy, too.

O.M.G.

I am officially madly in love with the nerd crowd (all over again).

I am nowhere NEAR skilled enough in the Nerd Arts to top any of this, but I'm looking to expand my horizons, so to speak.

I did, however, dismantle a computer today.

Heh. I can't think of anything specific that I've done that's nerdy lately, I just kind of *am* one. I can think of a couple examples...

I invented a new word, Ohmega: The end of the struggle. To be shouted after beating a really hard boss.

I also relate many everyday occurences to math. "Secrets don't make friends, but friends make secrets." "Oh, so it's not a biconditional statement: If friends, then secrets."

I also quote Monty Python. At least once a week.

That's all offhand I've got...

Wrote in Z80 assembly a 64-column text display routine for my ZX Spectrum. The ROM dictated a 32 column display with fixed characters. With this achieved I went on to implement the routine in a WIMP environment for the same machine, complete with mouse. Used the WIMP environment to access files and data on a Wafadrive.

I used to know the opcodes from memory for commonly used Z80 machine code, ie copying data, jumps, returns, comparing as well as ascii codes. And their hex equivalents. Forgotton most of that, now.

Hacked a Casio FX850P pocket computer and revealed (and put to use) its system variables. Wrote a collection of Databank list handling functions for it which allowed me to search, delete and move data without having to use the built in databank functions.

Wrote a text-based 'artificial intelligence' program for my Spectrum (which these days would be seen as laughable) then soldered together a null modem cable and connected it to a friend's Commodore Amiga. He wrote a similar program and we let the two machines talk to each other.

Started — but never finished — a text based adventure which would load saved games from Elite. The idea was to let you walk around the space station you were docked at (you could only save the game while docked at a station). I had the space station ID down, as well as things like name, cash, legal status, cargo etc. I thought things like casinos, bars and markets would be a cool thing to have station side. The thing that stumped me was the algorithm to generate the various information for the station from its id. In the game, there is an algorithm for generating the planets and the stats of their stations which, at the time, was difficult to reverse-engineer.

I'm sure a few moments of Googling would reveal that algorithm, but it's now 2008 and that would be weird.

Maybe.
