When I was little we had a terrific snow storm (a rare occurance in eastern NC) that finished up with a brief mix of ice. What resulted was a nice layer of snow glazed over super slick. Not being one to waste such an opportunity my dad devised his own version of sledding.

He, my two neighbors, and myself all piled into his plastic fishing boat (we refer to them as a "john boat" and they usually have one seat and look a bit like a plastic raft) and slid down our very long and steep driveway for hours.

At one point the neighbors dog got in the boat too!

It was fun and the boat made a pefect multi person sled. I bet it was more comfy than a wok too!

My craziest "winter olympic event" was getting four of my friend to join me in a kiddie pool that we pushed down a hill behind my house (4 of us sat in the pool while one pushed it then jumped in - it was our version of bobsledding). Not only did it "fly" down that hill but it spun in circles doing so. It was better than any amusement ride, too bad it hit a line of tree and cracked down the middle. It didn't stop us from repeating the process several more times until one of the kids mothers saw what we were doing and almost had a heart attack.
Oh by the way, we were all between the age of 8 and 10 years old at the time.

I went to college in South Carolina, where snow days were such a rare occurrence the dining hall actually willingly gave us trays for sledding. Being a Northern girl and used to the snow, I always chose staying in my warm bed under the covers over freezing my butt off in the snow on a tiny cafeteria tray.

I can vouch for the speed of a dining service tray on icy snow. Fun, dangerous, and breaking rules all at the same time. I actually had a lot of food service employees in my group of friends so we used the big trays from the back instead of the puny trays people eat off of. I hope my kids don't find out about mommy's days of riding down icy stairs on a plastic tray . . .

At my college (as with other schools, I would imagine), the snow day tradition was to steal the trays from the dining hall, wrap them in the cellophane the d.h. provided for take-away food, and "sled" down our only, kind of lame hill. I never did it, mainly because on snow days, I was found in bed and not at the d.h. But apparently, they went very, very fast.

The wok racing gave me a flash to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation when Clark greases up his metal sled. Now I'm going to be chuckling all day, and my coworkers will walk by shaking their heads at the "crazy lady".
