Johnny Cat:

Ever hear of "Napoleonic Law"? Guess not.

It's the legal system that most of Europe and a large part of the European-colonized world uses. It involves the institution of tribunals, inquisitions where there is no adversial system (like th U.S.) but rather "fact finding" where there is no "me vs them" mentality.

Their legal costs are lower than the U.S because there's no monetary payoff for defense and/or prosecution.

Not saying it's better - just different.

I'm an American Muslim, and I think it is very insightful of the building's designers to put Muhammad's frieze there. God used him to bring the rule of law to the Arabian peninsula (which was rife with brutal tribal infighting and completely devoid of order) and to the world through the Quran. It's true that Muslims aren't really down with the idea of statues, but how could the designers know that? I think it's really cool that it's there.

I had a professor for a Middle East history class who had studied in Iran just before the revolution. He told us that in some areas, you could find keychains with Muhammad's picture. It reinforced his earlier statement that Shi'ites are more tolerant of images. Very, very interesting though (well, the whole class was an incredible eye opener, even for this liberal).

Hiro--

Thanks, that's why I come here every day. I love learning new things, like Napoleon was actually responsible for some good in our history. My western civ professor kinda glossed over that.

The irony of the Prophet of Islam being on the Supreme Court building is thought provoking.

www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/

tracks dozens of images of Muhammad from the historical and venerable, to the modern and satirical. Dante had Mohammed burning in hell for sowing discord. You know, conquering Christian lands (Egypt, Syria, Palestine),thus causing never ending strife, beheading all the Jews in Medina, that sort of thing.

There 's a church in Italy that has a fresco from the middle ages that depicts Dante's vision of Muhammad in hell. Now days, the fresco is behind an iron gate and the church has 24 hour security.
