At the end of the Pixar CARS movie, there are a few funny little clips of John Ratzenberger's character Mac (Truck) watching other "CARified" Pixar movies, and commenting on his other "characters" -- like, "Wow, that guy is a brilliant actor!" My kids didn't get it at all, but I thought it was pretty funny.

John Ratzenberger was in The Empire Strikes Back? That makes two guys in that movie who were also on brilliant half-hour comedies (I can't see the rebel commander on Hoth without imagining him ordering a Waldorf Salad.)

Also, I was an extra when I first moved to Hollywood, and at that time every extra in life wanted to be on Cheers. They were famous for treating their background performers well.

You know how sometimes, when Norm enters, some person you've never seen before sets him up with the straightline for his opening joke? What you're seeeing there is a non-union extra on the night they got their first line on TV, which got them into SAG.

my kinda-godfather was on an episode of Cheers as a Salvation Army bell-ringer in a Christmas episode. He always told us that Ted Danson wore lifts in his shoes and a hairpiece. Not sure if he was pulling mine and my sister's leg or not, but every time I watch Cheers I visualize Same bald.

John Ratzenberger has had a part in every Pixar movie to date. I think the Adbominable Snowman in Monsters, Inc. is my favorite. I did get worry in The Incredibles, since he didn't show up till the very end.

Some fun facts; The only characters to appear in every episode were Norm and Carla.
Frasier not only said his dad was a psychiatrist, but that he was dead. Whoops.

And I vote for Woody, though I thought both Diane and Rebecca were good characters.

Cheers was one of the greatest shows ever and unlike most long running shows, it was almost as good eleven years later, as it was when the show began. If Ted Danson had wanted to continue, I think it still had another two or three seasons on it (but then we would have waited longer for the equally wonderful Frasier series).

After reading #1... I think a good column would be to point out some successful series who's stars had a successful first career in something totally unrelated to entertainment, like Fred Dryer.
