Diane was my favorite character on Cheers and I completely lost interest in the show after she left. I loved both Coach and Woody though and I feel they were both classic.

No question in my mind: Diane. The character was wonderfully drawn and realized not just in and of herself, but as a foil for everyone else in the bar. Her perspective and interactions with everyone put the human comedy front and center, and that was the heart of the show. Shelley Long was brilliant in the role and her chemistry with Ted Danson is legendary. Sam and Diane are the definitive touchstone for great sitcom pairings. I watched for a while after Diane left, but eventually lost interest in the show. Rebecca was great in the beginning, but the crying and the insecurity got old for me.

Coach and Woody is a tougher call, but I've gotta go with the loveable Coach. In addition to being the sweet goofball, he was a father figure to Sam and the gang, and made for a welcoming and naively wise sounding board and counselor. I think that was missed in his absence.

Oh yeah, and those 80's fashions did no favors for Kirstie Alley. It's like they spend so much time covering her up that they make her look huge, maybe that was the fashion though.

Rebecca over Diane, obviously. Diane gets really annoying and maybe its because I've watched a lot of it out of order, but the Sam & Diane bit just gets old. And it was Sumner Sloan in the first episode. Frasier doesn't show up until Sam and Diane break up the first time.
I'm fine with both Woody and Coach, although I think part of the joke with Coach is that he's actually a lot smarter than he seems, (like in the episode where Diane comes back after their big fight and Coach works Diane, Sam and Frasier from different angles so she comes back). I do with Diane had been a bit smarter though. And sometimes Carla is just ridiculously mean, so she gets on my nerves too. Also I think Norm is a pretty crappy husband, there's only one episode where he admits that he really loves Vera and all the jokes are for show, but really he's a dirtbag.

I grew up watching "Cheers" and of course I loved the character of Diane Chambers, because she seemed really classy to me and I thought it was so cool that she valued intellectualism in people so highly. I recognize Shelley Long probably wasn't anywhere near the same as Diane Chambers, but in the '80s she and Diane Sawyer of ABC News made me proud of my first name.

I liked Rebecca Howe too. I thought she was a different person who, even though she was searching for a rich man, was still quite down to earth, and her boyfriend (Robin?) was likeable. I liked Woody too and felt protective of his childlike innocence and sweet relationship with Kelly (remember how the only major disagreement they had was something to do with what branch of Lutheranism they were raised in?), so when I found out Woody's dad gunned down a federal judge in my hometown, I felt like I was punched in the gut.

Thanks to Robert C. Becker for filling out the story blanks regarding the discrepancy on Frasier's dad's identity and story. I was going to comment on that too. Also, I was glad they addressed that on Frasier instead of assuming no one remembered what was said about the Crane patriarch on Cheers and that he was always described as a former detective. That was one of the reasons why Frasier was so awesome.

As for the "whoops" dealing with Frasier claiming his father was a deceased psychiatrist who kept an owl as a pet, this was explained in an episode the episode of Frasier in which Sam Malone appears. Frasier was angry at his father due to a telephone call in which Martin calls Frasier a stuffed shirt and hangs up on Frasier. Frasier maligned his father while still feeling angry and not wishing to bring his father up again to his friends at Cheers.

I got into Cheers after seeing my dad wear a shirt with "Normisms" written on the back. It's such a great show, they really don't make 'em like this anymore. Both Rebecca and Diane were great characters played well, and instead of thinking which one I like better I think they just reflect different atmospheres of the bar at different times. When the fortune machine runs out of slips of paper is still one of my favorite moments on the show. I love Coach and Woody both, but Woody's just too adorable. I love all the characters, and I wish I was old enough to have watched it when it was first on. Now I have to stay up till 1 to watch it on WGN. Totally worth it!

At the end of the Pixar CARS movie, there are a few funny little clips of John Ratzenberger's character Mac (Truck) watching other "CARified" Pixar movies, and commenting on his other "characters" -- like, "Wow, that guy is a brilliant actor!" My kids didn't get it at all, but I thought it was pretty funny.
