By now I’m sure most of you have heard about the woman suing the government for 3 quadrillion dollars over the Katrina tragedy.
I was having a hard time even visualizing 1 quadrillion dollars, so I went looking for it online. Alan Taylor over at KOKOGIAK has put together the most wonderful penny visualizer, starting with a single cent and working his way up to 1 quintillion. You MUST go to the site and check out the whole visual journey, but I leave you here with a taste of 1 quadrillion pennies. (That little green thing on the right is a football field, in case you’re wondering.)

So a few hundred million or even a billion just wasn’t enough?

I would give them to her – if everyone turned in their pennies that they dont use, there would be more than plently. I just want to see what she is going to do with them all.

Hadn’t heard about the lawsuit (good luck on that) but I had seen The MegaPenny Project a while back; I wrote a piece on the names of large numbers, and that’s one of the sites I sighted and cited in my post. ;o)

That was a fun web site. I had fun trying to read off the numbers from the “Big Numbers” chart to my husband, although it did make me feel semi illiterate!

Ohhh… you have to go to the bonues MegaMoo project… Priceless.
(And on a side note, what kind of idiot files a claim for 3 quadrillion dollars? It´s senseless claims like these that almost make you want to throw out the whole lot.)
