Edward: As far as I can tell, the Ionian's issue is not related to the nationally printed Onion. The Onion mentioned in this article was founded in 1988 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; the inspiration for the name was merely an onion sandwich. It appears The Ionian no longer publishes an April Fools edition, since the last spring issue of 2009 was March 5; the next issue wasn't until September 3.

Alum: I'm surprised the staff of NMSU's Conscience was expelled -- I guess they were printing rather controversial topics?

Back in the late 60's New Mexico State University had dueling student papers, the official Round Up (known to the student body as the Ground Up as in beef) and an underground paper run by students called the Conscience. The Conscience gave the behind the scenes at NMSU until its staff was discovered and expelled. Quite interesting articles at the time, still miss them to this day.

It may not count but both Harvard and Emerson have two humor publications. Harvard has Lampoon and Demon while Emerson has Hyena and Lauph.

The Iona College (New Rochelle, NY) newspaper was The Ionian but it's April Fools edition was called The Onion. Is this Onion newspaper related in some way? Is Iona still able to issue their April Fools edition? Am curious as I am an alum of Iona.

Don't forget America's only Tri-Lingual newspaper, La Gaceta. It is published once a week in historic Ybor City here in Tampa.

Kevin: I had heard about the football game, but forgot. Thanks for mentioning it!

Amy & Rachel: I'll have to check out the Porcupine Press and the Arcata Eye; they both sound great.

I'm a fan of the Arcata Eye, a weekly paper out of Arcata, CA. (I might have already plugged them on this blog--I totally forget.)
The editor-in-chief is also the crime reporter, and apparently has tons of spare time on his hands.

Recent examples:
12:06 p.m. In retrospect, it was sheer foolishness to leave a portable computer, wallet and other valuables in a car at Fourth and J streets over the weekend.

12:20 p.m. A humanoid was observed curled up in a sleeping bag in an alley behind a downtown hardware store. Police investigated the worrisome lumpage, and determined that it was a futon in the shape of a person. The officers rearranged the futon so it didn’t look so much like a dead bod.

12:27 p.m. Nearby, a man lolling about in I Street was advised about wiser sitting practices.
