• And this Friday and Saturday, we’ll be offering an abundance of lists – 19, to be exact. The countdown begins with a quirky list of 10 items, then 9, and all the way down to 1. To stretch into the weekend, we’ll snake around and head back up to 10. Get excited.

  1. Ref: Mangesh Hattikudur’s thing on Yahoo news today, about famous Quakers:

He left out the most AWESOME one of ALL: General Smedley Butler, USMC “The Fighting Quaker”, author of “War Is A Racket”. One of only TWO people awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor TWICE, he never disconnected from being a Quaker. His dad was a congressman for like 30 years. How many congressmen or senators have kids fighting in Iraq? Hah! Butler’s book is STILL awesome and most relevant. He is not buried in Arlington with the heros, he is buried in Pennsylvania with the Quakers. The Marines have not forgotten General Butler, and they LOVE him as he loved them. Poke up www.findagrave.com and see the huge number of loving notes, bouquets, etc. left by Marines and others. My grandfather never mentioned Butler, but grandpa talked just the same about WWI. Grandpa’s brother came back from France in a box, minus his head. Butler’s book is not a screed or rant, it carefully documents the economic underpinnings of WWI and many other campaigns Butler fought, including in Central America. I’m a veteran myself and I just LOVE this guy. “The Fighting Quaker”! Of all the Quakers you could mention, he is the most incredible but TRUE! PS Loved your article.
