Regarding Picard and the flute, I'm pretty darn sure that Patrick Stewart is no flautist. I seem to recall that looking pretty obviously looped.

That said, the flute is what I carried when roll-stepping down the hot pavement in a wool uniform, complete with cape and spats. And I can attest that although it is predominantly girls who play it, the best flautists are mostly men. This is because it requires large lung capacity, due to the fact that you have to waste about half of the air. Guys tend to be bigger than gals, so they do have a natural advantage. Jean Pierre Rampal, James Galway....

Alan Parsons (of Alan Parsons Project fame) can play the flute. (Not much call for it in progressive rock, but you can hear him on "Oh Life, There Must Be More", on the "Try Anything Once" album).

Peter Wingfield (best known as Methos on "Highlander: the Series") can apparently play the flute. Not sure if he counts as a band geek; he's Welsh, and I have no idea what the social dynamics of musical instruments are on that side of the Pond.

War Damn Eagle! Though I knew of Frakes's and Clinton's musical inklings, I did not know that Ms. Anderson was so talented.

Oh, hooray for the Animaniacs theme song! That brought back memories. Isn't it funny how you can go years without hearing a song, and the moment you even catch a whiff of it again, it's like you just heard it yesterday?

It's a (ahem) red letter day! I'm an Auburn grad, a red (um, Auburn) haired girl (see Wendy's post), and a former band geek. Because, or in spite of, these facts, I've grown up to be a relatively normal Floss reading individual (if the 2 aren't mutually exclusive). War Eagle Steven!
