HumanCar calls it the Bi-Directional Human Power Inteface.

The Imagineâ„¢ and the FM4 Troublemakerâ„¢ being able to generate power for your home in stationary mode.

Green efficient ways to get multiple people and cargo places.

Fun idea, but I don't see it going very far (literally and figuratively.) I do like how the rowing action is used for charging the batteries rather than a direct drive system. I wonder if they'll build a smaller 1 or 2 person model.

I did a little writeup a while back on something similar; the Roadboat. A bunch of crazy Canadians built a 4-man row-powered vehicle to set a human powered cross-country record. No electricity involved, but interesting parallel.

Interesting point from Katherine. In fact, this article covers areas I have not seen in previous information areas about this project. The vehicle may also be placed in a 'power-up' mode at home to generate power as well creates another interesting dialogue stream.

I find this concept car very interesting because it seems safer than a bicycle. I live in a college town in Texas, and while it is small enough to use bicycles, they are not safe because people who drive cars do not watch for them. The thought of being creamed by a monster SUV or truck scares me enough to prevent me from riding a bike. A human powered vehicle that is the size of a car is a great idea for the added safety factor that goes beyond a bicycle or electric scooter. I don't think I'd want something human-powered for long trips, but it would be nice for running errands. I don't think many people in the southern states would find a car without air conditioning very plausible, though. When it is 110 degrees in the shade, I'd have to be crazy to want to do any kind of major physical exertion without an AC present.

I think it looks cool. Bikes sort of scare me (balance issues). I'd be interested to see the prototype with the cargo area.

One has to wonder. How much money was wasted on this concept. People that want human powered vehicle buy bicycles.
