Sixth Caption Contest Finalists!
by David K. Israel - February 10, 2008 - 9:02 AM

The New Yorker cartoonist Zach Kanin has reviewed our latest caption contest entries and winnowed it down to 7 finalists. Now the fun really begins: it’s up to YOU to pick the winner. As with last time, each finalist is labeled with a letter. All you have to do is decide which is the best (whatever your definition of “best” is), and drop your ballot in the comments below.

Remember what’s at stake? A crisp copy of Zach’s new book: The Short Book,

As always, one vote per person!

And the 7 finalists are…

A. Kevin entered: “Pssssst, I don’t think I am the only one in here.”

B. Erik Bussinger entered: “Now, Thomas, just because you think you’re rid of me doesn’t mean you can go about shuffling your feet!”

C. Heather entered: “Hey kid, can you nab me some shrimp cocktails? I’m starving to death in here!”

D. John C entered: In a British accent: “I’m not quite dead yet.”

E. Chelsea O. entered: Now you don’t HAVE to kiss grandpa goodbye!!
F. Marcy entered: You call that last respects, kid?!
G. Chris entered: “I think I’ve made my point.”

  1. Sorry, but it has to be D. I laughed out loud on that one. :D

  2. I vote for A

  3. F, although D was not bad.

  4. D for my vote

  5. Definitely D!

  6. D. It’s a classic line.

  7. A was by far the funniest although D takes a close second.

  8. F for sure. D is someone else’s line – not original.

  9. E or F… the winner shouldn’t be a monty python rehash.

  10. A hands down

  11. G. G is awesome

  12. D.

  13. A!

  14. F

  15. F. (followed by C)

  16. None of these really capture Kanin’s style, which is easy to tell given the selection of finalists. I read that Kanin was to select the winner, doesn’t seem like it. MF…are you just fishing for hits with all these “Vote for your fav deals?”

    My wife liked C

  17. b

  18. G FTW

  19. G!

  20. D, for sure.

  21. F! It makes me giggle.

  22. G. G is hilarious, with B a close second. d isn’t funny. it’s derivative. Monty Python = funny. Quoting Monty Python = annoying.

  23. G — It has a bit of sharp humor to it.

I’m disappointed the Monty Python reference would be chosen by a professional cartoonist as a finalist. Not quite sure how to interpret that choice.

  24. A

  25. D

  26. A

  27. it should have been something like “this is what happens when you don’t eat your vegetables”

  28. A….. because I can

  29. A the only funny one………

  30. D!

    PLEASE

    im a python fanatic

  31. A is by far the correct answer. YEAHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Get it right!!!

  32. C

  33. Has to be D – but maybe that’s just because I am a Python geek!!

  34. A

  35. D, has to be!

  36. A is the best

  37. D was the only one I actually even smiled at!

  38. G

  39. E!!!!!

  40. Gotta be “F”.

Have to agree with Derek on “D” – we can do better.

  41. A

  42. D

  43. A

  44. G is by far the best fit for the style.

I’m embarassed to see that D even made the finals. Please do not select D. I agree wholeheartedly with derek in comment 22.

  45. To be quite honest, none of them are that funny. The Monty Python line doesn’t fit that well….and it’s practically sacrilege to a dye hard fan. The only one that was that clever was the “starving to death” line but “sandwich” would have been better. So if I had to choose I’d say C.

  46. D!!!!!

  47. C

  48. A. Has to be A.

  49. Straight, simple, very funny and to the point; A.

    Tony

  50. None are that good but I’ll pick A.

  51. D
    didnt see that one coming
C is pretty good too though

  52. As tempted as I am to vote for C, F definitely made me laugh.

  53. A all the way!

  54. G!!!
