Anneke – thank you for the correction; I’m not sure where I got that. I have updated the post with info about who actually did resign/get fired (certainly not Mitterand, who died in 1996) as a result of the bombing and the resulting scandal.

graham – Paul Watson is now with Sea Shepherd, not Greenpeace, and the Ady Gil was a Sea Shepherd ship. He’s pretty close to a terrorist though.

Actually, Paul Watson hasn’t been with Greenpeace since the mid-70′s. They voted him off the board of directors, and have referred to him as a violent extremist (source of info linked in my name). The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was the owner of the Ady Gil, which is the group Paul founded- unrelated to Greenpeace.

I think Mister Splashy Pants was great PR for Greenpeace. Look at how much attention their campaign got because of that name. I wish they would do more fun campaigns that people could rally around like this, instead of some of the more obnoxious antics they often resort to.

How about the ‘fill in alarmist and armegaddonist factoid here’ gaffe in a Greenpeace press release in 2006? I remember it from a question on Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me at NPR.
