I hope to be the freak of the future. A fat "lady" who can out run, out lift, and out yoga most skinny b*tches.

It seems to me that the current political correctness that looks down on freak shows and other flagrant celebrations of diversity is often just a cover to censure said diversity.

Violetta was never billed as a hermaphrodite. The "half-lady" came from the fact that she was only half the size she would be if she had arms and legs. Ergo, half of her was missing.

I for one don't understand why Aloisia Wagner aka "Violetta, The Half Lady" was so billed- according to those doctors who had examined her physically,(save for her body's lack of limbs) she quite like any other woman- she wasn't a hermaphrodite. I think it's just as well that we no longer have "human oddities" to stare at- true, Violetta and her ilk might argue that if people are going to stare and gawp and them, they might as well pay for the privilege but this overlooks the evolving sensibilities of a society!

A lot of these people now tour with "The Pretty Things Peepshow"

It's a really great act! I've seen Insectavora, Heather Holliday, and Donny Vomit when I have gone to the show. It may not be Coney Island but it was fun. Check out the link.

Miss Cellania,

Yup, that makes sense. My summers on the Jersey Shore (a phrase that I was never embarrassed to utter before that godawful show!) and visits to Coney Island are blurring together!

Kate, The Enigma is a fascinating character, but this post was limited geographically to Coney Island. Otherwise it would be way too long! I will make a note for a future post.

I agree with the 'Freaks' recommendation. There's nothing scary about it, but I wouldn't say that the ending isn't disturbing.

Lexie, have you seen the movie 'Fur'? If you find men with hypertrichosis attractive, then you definitely need to see one portrayed by Robert Downey, Jr.!

I was surprised that The Enigma wasn't on the list.

Hadassah--shame on you.

I only wonder what future freak shows will be made up of.

Tattoos and piercings are so common now that persons with them no longer qualify as "freaks." We see them everywhere.

Advances in medicine have allowed the prevention of a large percentage of birth defects such as microencephaly, dwarfism, hypertrichosis, dipygus twins, etc. Many of them can now be headed off with the introduction of vitamins and medications at certain times during pregnancy. Our current knowledge of simple things like nutrition, sanitation, and lifestyle also contribute to the reduction of birth "defects."

So what will future "freaks" be?

You know, as far as Hadassah is concerned, I'm simply flummoxed as to how anyone can support that belief. (I'm also fairly certain stupidity is a form of avodha zarah.)

As for the Coney Island performers, it's interesting that a lot of the top-billed acts these days aren't freaks per se, but folks who render themselves different, but would otherwise earn mainstream approval. It's kind of like the environment has been made more conventionally family-friendly. The values have certainly changed over time (freak shows were the family-friendly activity over a hundred years ago as well.)

The History Channel did a great episode on the "Sideshow" some years back; many of the preformers were quite bitter about "outsiders" destroying shows with the exploitation angle; the busybodies were screwing up their livelihood, & destroying their cashcow.
