Lunchtime Quiz: UK or USA?

Many actors train for years to overcome their natural accents, whether they’re from Boston, Tupelo, Glasgow, or Leeds. Some have gotten so good at it that it might be difficult to determine whether they’re native to the land of tea and crumpets or the land of cola and corn chips. Today’s quiz asks you to determine the original homes of 15 sitcom stars from over the years.

Will you correctly answer them all? We’re betting you won’t. Try to prove us wrong!

  1. Lame.

  2. Very lame.

  3. This quiz is a trick quiz which really isn’t a quiz but posed as a quiz.

I should have just answered “C: down the middle”.

  4. Yes, of course no one will get them all right, since you implied (nay, stated outright!) that at least some of the answers would be U.K. Lame, indeed.

  5. Lame.

More posed like a college psych experiement: given the potential for doubt, what would people guess?

    Gimmie my 3 credits.

  6. ya. I wish I had read the comments before jumping into the quiz. I adore your quizzes, but if you arent actually going to have one, just a Neener-Neener moment, I will skip it.

  7. Please give me that 2 minutes back.

  8. Quiz should have been called “Who was born in states beginning with the word NEW”.

    Oy vey.

  9. That was the worst quiz in the history of Mental_floss quizes. Not only was it a trick quiz, it was also just plain dumb. Sandy and Kara should be publicly humiliated for punishment. I don’t know some sort of sandwich board penalty.

  10. Well, you made me second guess my answers, I’ll give you that. It’s not like I scored 100%.

Still, it was pretty unsatisfying… or maybe I’m just a sore loser. It might take some time to get passed this.

  11. I agree with what others have said. It is not really a quiz if you rig it the way you did.
You should give us all free shirts.

  12. LAME.

you can’t imply that there are possibly two answers when its ALL one answer. give me my minutes back!

  13. snarl :) no fair!!!

  14. Sheesh I smell sour grapes.
I still managed to get a 9 out of 15.
I thought for sure that guy from the Jefferson’s was British. D’OH!!

  15. You bet sour grapes! Bad form guys!

  16. My grapes are sour too because my husband is British so I was hoping for an easy 100%. Once again, le sigh…

  17. What the hell? You should be ashamed. Aside from the fact that being born in the 80s I didn’t know who half those people were…not to mention the fact that I’m also in the UK right now, which kinda adds insult to injury.

  18. :(

  19. Booo! Between the too-easy 1-hit wonder quizzes and this thing, I’m starting to wonder if you’ve lost your Quiz Mojo. If so, please stop posting quizzes until you can come up with a few that don’t suck.

I got 100%, by the way. By the time I got to #5, it started to smell a bit fishy.

  20. That sucked. Mental Floss is usually great but that was terrible.

For starters, I assumed each person would have a video clip so you could listen to their (fake or otherwise) accent.

Secondly, like Colin, I was born in the 80s and only knew who two of the actors were.

Thirdly, the fact that they were all the same. That was a waste of time and I’m disappointed in you.

  21. I just wanted the answers so I kept hitting USA.. I knew Nancy Kulp was from PA because of an interview she did shortly before she died.

People thought Vincent Price was British, but he was from Kansas.

The actress who plays Rose on “Two And A Half Men” is from New Zealand. She has to hide her NZ accent because the Rose character needs to be an American girl. To her, she’s faking an American accent when she plays Rose.

  22. WTH? I’m sorry, did this count as credit for some of you?

Did it prevent you from getting into your college of choice?

SO you got tricked. Boo. Hoo.

Perhaps those of you who are too young to know who those people are should try some of the trivia quizzes over at nick.com. Oh you mean they don’t have intelligent and witty quizzes made for fun over on that site?

Quit griping, lighten up. Sheesh. :D

  23. This was one of the few quizzes that I was actually interested in taking. 2 out of 5 seem neat. If you don’t want to provide bored people with time wasting activities that occasionally make them feel like their trivia banks are at all useful, then skip it. It’s not like I would’ve noticed if there was no quiz at all.
