In particular note that the rather loose borrowing in the “I Have a Dream” speech is quite limited, only in part of the peroration, not the main body of the speech. Also, if you google Archibald Carey, Jr. it transpires that he was a friend of King’s who raised money for him in the 1950s in Chicago — which might explain how King came to have available to him a speech Carey gave 11 years before King’s speech.

this is one of the most iteresting things that i have heard… er um seen, in a while. as a fan of mlk i wouldn’t have expected this but i guess as a child i’m not knowing that much. i am doing a paper on plagiarism and some famouse people that have done it, i will be suer that i include some information from this and say where i got it from. thanks bunches, allie kasdorf <3

I believe T.S. Eliot said something to the effect once that all great writers borrow. And then of course Harold Bloom wrote his seminal work The Anxiety of Influence based on this very idea.

Moon, I completely agree with you about “The Red and the Black.” I had to read it in 10th grade in the original French (I lived in France at the time- it wasn’t that far-fetched.). That book is just awful. I wanted to kill whoever decided to make us read it. And I love reading.

My latin teacher told us that “The only thing that we have to fear is fear itself” was actually a quote from an ancient Roman orater, tho I cant remember which one so I cant really back that up

By the by, they engraved the place where MLK stood to give “I Have a Dream” on the steps on the Lincoln Memorial. I used to love going and standing there when I was a DC intern.
