@beth, that bit about Vivian Vance is false, according to Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/vance.asp). She was deliberately given less flattering makeup and wardrobe, though.

Cindy Williams (Shirley) left the show, not Laverne. It did get pretty pathetic when Lenny and Squiggy became the "stars."

The first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this column was this clip, which made the rounds but for your enjoyment:

On the third season of Cybill, Shepherd's sitcom in the 90s, there was a storyline of her being on a hit series but being upstaged by her co-star, an obnoxious newcomer... gee, wonder where that idea came from?

From what I've heard the guys on Mythbusters get along alright, but they're not best friends or anything. They say that the arguing is part of the design process. Popular Mechanics has done a number of articles on them (and by them) and there doesn't seem to be a lot of tension.

How was Laverne written off the show? Did they change the title? I lamentably (and vaguely) recall Lenny & Squiggy becoming the stars of the show. Anyone care to share the details they remember?

In the Matchgame videoclip, I notice more that Gene Rayburn seems drunk than Richard Dawson was being mean.

There is a strong belief that Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage from Mythbuster can't stand each other. This tension is sometimes very visible on the show. They certainly have different personalities. Adam is fun and spontanious and Jamie is a sad, serious bastard.
