One thing I think that should be on this list is the stealing of the Amber Room from Catherine Palace in Russia. But maybe that's me. :3

Jen - I read a book on art thefts some time ago (good book, pity I forgot the name) that said part of Isabella Stewart Gardner's will was that the house must remain exactly as it was when she died, so sadly, although they presumably collected insurance money on the pieces, they *can't* replace them...

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum never replaced the stolen paintings, either. They just have the gaps on the walls where those pieces used to hang, which is cool.

Why don't you d-bags get over yourselves. It's a title in a online blog list. It doesn't make you smart to pick apart a simple title that obviously is just worded for catchy alliteration. It makes you annoying and pretentious.

In reference to Leonardo's last name, I do believe "da Vinci" actually was his last name. I once visited the Leonardo da Vinci museum in Vinci, Italy, where I was told that by the time Leonardo was born, "da Vinci" was his family's last name, so even if he hadn't been born in Vinci himself, his name still would have been "Leonardo da Vinci."

I realize that, Dan, but it is a huge pet peeve of mine and seeing it on a site that claims it is where "knowledge junkies get their fix" made me sad. :)

It did, however, make me feel smart again, so at least one slogan didn't let me down.

"The Disappearing Da Vinci" is a catchy title, Allie. The author referred to the artist as Leonardo da Vinci in the text.
