Can you name (and spell) Canada’s 10 provinces and 3 territories?

Take the quiz.

Here’s a little something to get you sufficiently pumped…

After the quiz, come back and tell us how well you know Canada. And remember, we’re still in Beta mode with the ‘Name x in y minutes’ genre.

  1. I got all but one - I forgot one. But it was one I knew, so I feel stupid for not being able to think of it. Hey, pretty good for a non-Canadian, eh?

  2. I lived in Canada for seven years, so anything less than 100% would have been terrible. Mission accomplished!

  3. that was humbling. I had never even heard of two of them. are you sure you weren’t just making up answers to mess with us?

  4. I couldn’t think of Nova Scotia, and I just plum forgot New Brunswick. It helps to be a hockey fan. I can, however sing O Canada in full, but only in English.

  5. Just an FYI….I couldn’t get the test to work….but I do know them all, so I give myself 100% (I’d better know them since I’m Canadian!)

  6. I didn’t even try, because I’m wicked hungover, but that commercial really made me wish I was Canadian.

Well, more. Our president made me wish I was Canadian a long time ago.

  7. Got them all except Newfoundland and LABRADOR…keep forgetting Labrador:) and I’m Canadian too,Eh!!

  8. Ok, finally got it to work….yep 100%

  9. “& Labrador” now thats getting a little picky.

  10. Got all but Nunavut. I’m still proud to be Canadian (just a little work required).

  11. Let me ask the Canadians in the audience: should we have accepted “Newfoundland”?

  12. If this were a US quiz would “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations” be required?

  13. Ah, I didn’t think I was making ‘Newfoundland’ up! :-) On a technical note - I’m using Firefox, and my answers started to scroll off the side of the ‘white space’ under the submit box. Added a whole new level of challenge, I must say. Could be something with my browser setup, though.

  14. A humbling 61% - not a proud performance! I didn’t miss Nunavut, thanks to the film, Atanarjuat, maybe the only movie made by the Inuits.

  15. I’d accept just Newfoundland. The addition of “and Labrador” was made official I think in 2001. I don’t know if I’m an “average” Canadian or not (lol) but I still refer to the province as just “Newfoundland” even though the “real” name includes “and Labrador”.

  16. We’ll go ahead and accept ‘Newfoundland’ from here on out. If you missed it and you’re bitter about it, give yourself a few bonus points. Don’t let it ruin your day.

  17. Yeah, 100% (thankfully, post-Labrador update).

  18. I got all but New Brunswick (which I completely forgot about) and Newfoundland (which I can’t believe I forgot).

  19. I am looking for an archive of these “name x in y” quizzes–I want to send this one and the U.S. states one to a colleague. I can’t find them…am I missing something?

  20. 100%, but I’m canadian.

As a New Brunswicker, I’m quite offended at the number of you who forgot my poverty stricken speck of a province (we’re the Mississippi of Canada). How can you not know the home of Moosehead Beer?

Also, they only added the “& Labrador” part to Newfoundland because Quebec kept making noises about annexing Labrador for themselves.

  21. Next X in Y idea:
How about “Name the 12 Parts Removed in the Original Operation Game in 2 Minutes?”

The thirteenth piece added in 2004 could be a bonus.

  22. I remembered them all, but didn’t score 100%, as I can’t get the quiz to accept labrador. I must’ve spent the last 30 seconds trying to put it in. I even went back and copied “Labrador” from this thread, and I still couldn’t get it to take.

I hope you get the quiz working soon.

  23. 10 out of 13. How could I forget Manitoba? I’m from Minnesota for pete’s sake!

“We are east of North Dakota, we are south of Manitoba…”

I knew there was a territory I wouldn’t get (Nunavut).

  24. Woohoo! 100% in 1:09. Not too shabby for an American, I think. :)

I remember studying Canada in 6th grade for a pretty extensive unit. I don’t remember what province I had, but I do remember reporting on hockey and making an awesome model of a hockey game out of a pop can flat and Lego people. It rocked.

Did anyone else study Canada? We’re not close to the border or anything, so I can’t attribute it to that. Maybe it’s a common 6th grade topic?

  25. @ Jess - The states one wasn’t an official _floss quiz. It was linked in one of the comments. Anyhow, I ‘borrowed’ the link and stuck it on my Facebook profile to challenge my friends, so I had it handy. Click on my name to go to the site.

  26. Did it in a minutes, although I guess I technically cheated cause Ive spent my whole life in the Great White North.

  27. Re: Newfoundland and Labrador: most of Canada wouldn’t care, but some of the people from Newfoundland I know might (especially, I imagine, those from Labrador).

Anyway, this was pretty easy, but I’ve lived in Canada all my life. :)

  28. I missed 4. I spent almost a whole minute trying to spell Saskatchewon (I ended up googling it).

  29. I only missed Yukon and Nunavet (which I couldn’t figure out how to spell). Maybe I should’ve taken geography of western north america instead of eastern north america.

  30. Saskatchewan, it’s an ‘a’ at the end not an ‘o’.

100%, but then, I am Canadian.

  31. 1min 7sec for 100%. If you are Canadian and you don’t get 100% you should be ASHAMED.

  32. I’m really starting to dislike the Canada!

    9 right is all! :P

/Hudson Bay SHOULD be province or a territory, dammit.

  33. I would have gotten them all if I could just spell Nunavut and Saskatchewan

  34. GMSC — I don’t think Labrador is one of the right answers. It accepted ‘Newfoundland and Labrador’ for me.

But what do I know, I’m from Delaware.

  35. I forgot Manitoba and New Brunswick. Not bad for a California boy.
I remembered how to spell Saskatchewan thanks to my High School geography teacher who taught it to us as a cheer:
    “SAS - KAT - CHE - WAN
    That’s how you spell it
    Here’s how you yell it
    SASKATCHEWAN!”

  36. I new everything but I just couldn’t spell Saskatchewan. Canada is awesome but i still prefer the United States and American football to hockey

  37. Live in Canada too, but kept spelling New Brunswick wrong…

    ps Newfoundland AND LABRADOR

  38. Obviously I got 100% (read my name before you hate me for saying that) but in a lousy 1:11. I left the Atlantic provinces for last (but not you, NL!), sorry, friends, and I went blank on NWT for a while.
    John P is craaaazy!
    Go Habs!!

  39. It’s a little sad that one of our most patriotic messages came not from a Prime Minister but from a beer commercial.
The Rant, as we Canadians call it, truly caused a sense of pride to spread throughout the country. People proudly wore their shirts with the Rant emblazoned on their backs, as they raised their formerly absent Canadian flags.
All because the Molson Canadian beer company reminded us that we have a lot to be proud of in Canada.

  40. The teacher of Canadian geography gets 100%.

  41. Spent most of my time trying various spellings of Nunavut until I found the right one.
Then I had to count the provinces. I can’t believe Ontario and Quebec were the last ones that came to mind. Strange

  42. I LOVE Canada!!
I got all of them but “Saskatchewan” becasue for some reason the little box didnt like the way I spelled it.
I guess spelling really DOES count.

    Renee of Portland, OR

  43. 100% in 1:02. I’m sort of stupidly proud of that, since I’m not Canadian.

  44. Kate - “did anyone else study Canada?” I grew up in central California - they didn’t even TELL us that ANYTHING existed above the 45 parallel much less above Washington State!
The only think I knew about Canada was that was where grandpa Robinson grew up and that is was north! That’s really, just about it!
    Sad, eh?

  45. missed New Brunswick and had never heard of Nunavut… should have gotten NB, though- drew a total blank.

  46. i got’em all with 40 secs to go…i’m going to celebrate with a tall glass of molson

  47. All of them in 40sec :) Then again, I do live there.

  48. 1 min 4 sec, but I type by the hunt and seek method.

I think newfoundland should not be accepted as the province is newfoundland and labrador and should be recognized as such (especially since labrador has been canadian longer than the more famous newfoundland

  49. Got all of them in 57 seconds…but Saskatchewan was not all that easy to spell…this was cool, though

  50. I studied Canada in 6th grade (in NJ). But unfortunately, in 1994 Nunavut wasn’t part of the curriculum yet, so while I knew there was a new one, I couldn’t remember it. I also missed the news about the “and Labrador” being added to Newfoundland- good to know. But other than that, I remembered them.

  51. 12 out of 13….all because I couldn’t spell “Nunavut”…damn those new territories!

I was also playing online poker as I did the test!

  52. Renee-

I’m sorry you missed out on the Canada unit–I remember we all thought it very fun! It is a shame that we are all so ignorant of Canada (and other countries in general). I’m sure the percentage of Americans who can name Canada’s PM is well below 10%.

My university also offered a course on Canadian history. My theory on all this Canada-ness in Nebraska is that we are also overlooked and ignored, and therefore, we feel Canada’s pain. :)

  53. On December 6, 2001, an amendment to Canada’s federal Constitution Act officially approved a name change from the easternmost province of Newfoundland to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. So, it’s been a while now; we Canadians should be used to the “new” name by now.

  54. 100% in 48 seconds.

  55. I got them in 37 seconds. Being Canadian probably helps on this one.

  56. Ouch. I missed Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Nunavut. I’ve got a problem with the Ns, apparently :)

  57. I am half-Canadian and I missed two.

…My mother is going to kill me when she finds out.

  58. 100%! I quickly typed down all but two and drew a blank until I had around 10 seconds left, then I finally remembered Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. I’m not Canadian, but I watch a lot of hockey so I see the names enough.

  59. Took me 36 seconds in total….and I was shocked to not have to put in the Labrador part (although most of my “newfie” friends aren’t too big on it!)

  60. All of them. In 30 seconds.

  61. 10 if you count the one that it didn’t count (I kept misspelling Nunavut, but I knew it).
