Around 1784 representatives from western North Carolina seceded their counties and formed the State of Franklin. Not recognized by the US or North Carolina, Franklin enjoyed very brief independance. During its four year history the state constitution attempted to ban preachers, lawyers and doctors from elected office, thus making it the inspiration for Ross Perot's political campaign.

Mormon founder Joseph Smith and Quaker founder George Fox are typically overshadowed by their proteges and the locations they made famous. Brigham Young made Salt Lake City the eventual Mormon home, while William Penn's family were given tribute through the naming of Pennsylvania.
