I've never actually played tabletop D&D, although I did once place a Milton Bradley kiddy version called HeroQuest (anyone remember that?). Reading this made me want to give it a try though. A personal connection: my mom is a licensed optician in Ohio, and for years she worked with the father of James Dallas Egbert III. He's a doctor of optometry, and has probably retired by now.
