I’ve got a couple standbys myself. These days, I go for “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys, “Silver Streets” by Ben Folds, “American Pie”, “Saturday in the Park” by Chicago, or anything by Billy Joel. I’m often wracking my brain for a new and interesting song to “play” in my head (especially ones I know the lyrics to!).

I don’t have one default song, it seems mine are situational. I used to hum the same tune every time I got undressed, until I figured out that it was the theme to “Leave it to Beaver.”
The funny thing about this is I can’t tell you how that tune goes if I try to because it always gets drowned out by the “I Dream of Jeanie” theme.

Also, we have a bridge at work that connects the two halves of the office. It’s elevated and reminds me of a catwalk. Every time I go over it I fight the urge to sing “Supermodel” by RuPaul…but it always plays in my head and I giggle like an idiot.

When a song gets stuck in my head at night and I can’t sleep, most recently “Landslide” by Stevie Nicks, I use the hymn “Amazing Grace”. It is like a hammer to smash all other songs and the tune will not ever stay when you turn it off. Works like a charm. Try it on your annoying defaults.

Anything featuring Nate Ruess (of the band The Format and now Fun), particularly “She Doesn’t Get It” and “The Gambler” (original song by Fun, not the Kenny Rogers one). The problem with the latter is that I only know part of the song, because the only clip that I can seem to find on YouTube has only a partial version.

I have a few default songs, and they vary depending on what’s stuck in my head and how hard it is for me to get rid of it. They are:

1. “Run To the Hills” by Iron Maiden
2. The theme song from “That 70′s Show”
3. “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand

for me right now (& the past few years)there has been 2 that always get stuck on repeat in my brain:

1 – nickelback – if everyone cared
2 – lacuna coil – enjoy the silence
