The Rafinesque Society at Transylvania was barely “secret” back in the 1970′s, Rachel. We had an official presentation for the whole school, inducting new members. However, we did wear silly black masks with a big “R” on the forehead.

At my undergrad, Transylvania University in Lexington KY, we have the Rafinesque Society, which meets only once a year with different members each time. These members were chosen to spend the night in Constantine Rafinesque’s tomb (a former professor at Transylvania in the 1800s who cursed the school)which is located under the steps of the oldest building on campus (which has burned down twice because of the curse). This takes place on the last night of a whole week’s worth of Halloween celebrations on campus.

Yeah, I think there was a mistake in the statement about the flat hat club ending due to the Civil War. Two decades from 1750 would have seen the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Maybe just a brain fart.

Someone I lived with a guy who gave me the dope. NYUâ€™s version of a snobby, elitist, preppy frat. I hear they are mostly Sternies, pre-law, journalism and premed students with a lot of guys in other frats and lots of athletes.

They have crazy, intense rituals that is like a night of hazing crossed with a cult. And they have an intellectual faÃ§ade to mask their greediness and ladder climbing.

They seem to run a bunch of extra-curricular activities and business organizations in New York put on parties and they argue a lot. He said some of them help each other and offer lots of opportunities but mostly donâ€™t take advantage of them. And they are pretty vicious to people who piss them off. Just what the world needs.

We know their names and histories. Surely in order to be a secret society, they would have to be, well … secret?
