By Terry Fernandes. Literature abounds with snow scenes, many beautiful, but many quite sinister. We’ve decided to see how well our readers know their literature by offering this little quiz. Match each excerpt with its origin.

By Jenny Brown: This one’s pretty straightforward. Name the 10 most populous U.S. cities in 2 minutes. IMPORTANT NOTE: This list refers only to the population of individual cities, and does not include surrounding suburban areas. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, take the quiz: Name the 10 Most Populous U.S. Cities.

  1. The data for this list came from the U.S. Census Bureau table titled “Annual Estimates of the Population for Incorporated Places Over 100,000, Ranked by July 1, 2006.”

You can see the whole list, from New York (#1) to Billings, Montana (#258), here:

    census.gov/popest/cities/tables/SUB-EST2006-01.csv

    Here’s 11-20:

    11. Detroit
    12. Jacksonville
    13. Indianapolis
    14. San Francisco
    15. Columbus
    16. Austin
    17. Memphis
    18. Fort Worth
    19. Baltimore
    20. Charlotte

  2. I can’t believe I missed Philidephia! San Jose was the other one I missed and I had tried every other big city I new in California.

On the literary quiz, thank you so much for including The Giver! It’s one of my favorite books of all time.

  3. I had no idea so many of the Top 10 were in Texas. Very interesting!

  4. Hmmm… didn’t see San Antonio coming. Or San Jose, but I never would have thought of that anyway.

  5. 70% ain’t bad. Didn’t know so many in California.

  6. 9/10. Only got San Diego, because I had written San Francisco, figured I still had the San, so deleted Francisco and tried it… but I would have never guessed San Jose in my life.

  7. no boston?

not even in the top 20?

    suprised me.

  8. I live in Houston, and I completely forgot about it!

  9. Only missed one: San Jose.

  10. The snow quiz was ridiculously hard. they must have picked the longest sentence hemingway has ever written(it had clauses!) and the quote about not having anything to eat was a trick question. Anyone having read Dr. Zhivago would have thought it was from that book. The steep hill quote, should have again, gone with Ethan Frome.

That one was way too tricky! Anyone who scored well on that quiz would have literally had to memorize most of those books.

  11. You might not think of Jacksonville as the #12 most populous city, but it makes sense; Jacksonville is actually the largest (in total area) city in the U.S.

  12. Texas has some big cities. And with the influx from Mexico (mostly Catholics, no birth control) we stand to get a lot bigger. This will be great for real estate!
