i have only just begun to get into long exposure photography myself, having never had access to a camera with a slow shutter before recently. this is some inspiring stuff, and i really appreciate that you got some technical details on the images instead of just posting them like most blogs would have done. you can always trust mentalfloss to do their homework!!

Thanks R, we can always count on you for bringing us the eye candy. :D
WOW. Those are really something else. I couldn't see them here either, but I checked out Flickr.
Looking at these photos evokes the same feeling I get when I read Stephen King.
Very impressive!!

It's simply mind-boggling that 'old school' photographic techniques produced these shots. Paiva is a remarkably talented artist - thanks for the great article and interview!

It's interesting in that Troy has specialized in night time photography when his name translates to "day" in Finnish.

You should checkout the "big shot" put on annually by the RIT school of photography... They've used similar techniques with very large objects (Aircraft carriers, Palaces, etc). It takes hundreds of volunteers hours to prepare some of these but the results are astounding.

And yes, for the astute reader I am a RIT Alum, but I never did get a chance to participate in one of these shots nor was I a photography major.
