The lottery is simply a voluntary tax. If we weren’t purchasing lottery tickets the government would be getting the needed tax dollars in some other way.

That said, what I choose to do with my money is my business, period.

I always hear how the odds of winning the lottery are higher than those of getting hit by lightning.

As I buy my ticket, and just ask, “Why do people go inside when they hear thunder?”

Somebody will win, everyone will fantasize for a few moments when they consider the possible outcome.

A local radio station once asked listeners what they would do if they won the Lotto. I called and told the DJ that I’d immediately book a flight to Oslo to accept the Noble Prize for Physics. When asked what that had to do with the Lotto, I said that winning the Lotto would prove the the Theory of Relativity – you never know how many relatives you have until you come into a large amount of money. His reply? Hey cousin, I’ve been looking all over for you!

I spend $4 a week on lottery tickets. I make $25 an hour. I think I can afford to contribute to the Hope Scholarship $208 a year. I get my few seconds of a tingle of excitement each time. fair trade.

The lottery shouldn’t be so villified; it helps pay for a lot of useful things. For example, here in GA, it is the main source of funding for the Hope scholarship, which is given out to any student who maintains a B average and attends an (in-state) university. It’s only about $2500 a year, but if you go to a state school, that could be over half tuition! My friends and I like to say that the people who “waste” their money on lottery tickets rather than say, putting it away for their children’s education, are actually unwittingly providing them a college fund.

What the lottery does is allow people to buy a dream for a week. For a few dollars you can get a weeks worth of day-dreams. People can do what they want with their own money and everyone else should mind their own business.

I know a guy who used to play drums in our music workshop… he got 4 or 5 numbers in the UK Lottery, and won $40,000.

He paid off his debts and bought himself a new van, with enough change for a haircut and a few pints.

Around 6 months later, he received a letter from Camelot saying there was an error, and he shouldn’t have got the 40k after all…

…It was meant to be 80k. Cheque enclosed!
