As promised, the Weekend Genius Challenge returns this week with a visual stumper. The graphic below contains 12 images that have something in common. Your job is to figure out what that “something” is. The order of the entries isn’t important, nor is their position within the grid.
If you’re the first to figure it out, you’ll win a T-shirt of your choice from the mental_floss online store. Just put your guess in a comment and send it on. (Comments must be moderated, so they won’t show up right away.) You can enter as many times as you like, but please put each guess in its own comment. Good luck!

Each picture represents an item or thing that is also the name of a movie.

More specifically, one-word movie titles, like Eraser, Airplane, Twins, Hook, Hairspray, Dinosaur, Signs, Contact, etc.

Damn! My guess was movie names as well.

Forgive me if you’ve already posted this, but who won the last Weekend Genius Challenge? (The one two weeks ago)

The first one must be Rope. Can’t figure out the last one, though.

I agree w/ Rope. Maybe the last one is Mustang? Question is….does the title have something to do with it (35)?
posted by Jeannette on 3-22-2008 at 3:33 pm
Thanks domobro…Maverick! It was driving me nutty. But I doubt the 1st one is Knotted. Too obscure, and a short film.

The picture seems to be broken … I can’t get it to load, no matter what I do. :(
posted by M on 3-22-2008 at 4:39 pm
I thought the last one was Cars.

I almost agree with Domobro, I still stand by the first one is Hitch not knotted, but Maverick makes more sense than Dodge especially after doing a google image search and finding that exact image under ford maverick
so the twelve titles are
Hitch
Signs
Contact
Seabiscuit
Twins
Airplane
Hairspray
Dinosaur
Eraser
Rocky
Hook
Maverick

Bravo to Eli, for getting Hitch – I guess not that many people are familiar with hitch knots, but being a sailor’s daughter, I am.
Sigh. I miss the gentle art of Macrame.

i tried to send this before but i didnt type the words in the spam blocker, agh…anyway, i’m going to go with a crazy guess…each photo contains something that is made of plastic (that is if the twins are dolls)

“12 going on 35″ are 12 images that are also titles on movies shot with 35 mm film. I think Eli has the movie titles correct.

The only thought that comes to mind is…two, or double. I know it doesn’t make sense or, perhaps, it might be too obvious.
Probably wrong, but there’s a guess after a 30 second look see.

thank you Art, I’m pretty sure the movie everyone else is thinking of is THE eraser.

I’ll go with the more obvious answer–they’re all the same size and shape image.

the first one is a clover hitch so that could be cloverfield or hitch

I don’t know how this would fit into the title, “12 Going On 35″, but each picture represents a word that is a noun and also a verb.
1. Knot
2. Sign
3. Eye
4. Horse
5. Baby
6. Fly
7. Spray
8. Toy
9. End (?) (Tip? Eraser?)
10. Rock
11. Hook
12. Ride

I would have never gotten Hitch, but I am pretty sure Maverick is right. My mom had one when I kid, I would recognize that POS anywhere.
