I was a Sin-Eater once in seventh grade. Sort of. Around that time the infamous storyline in the Spider-Man comics dealt with a character Jeanne DeWollfe (sp?) being murdered by a villain called “The Sin Eater”. I was deep into that story at that point, “It’s the quiet, unobvious ones you have to watch out for” is still one of my life rules (along with “Don’t play cards with a guy named ‘Doc’, Don’t eat at a place called ‘Mom’s’, and never ever sleep with anyone with more troubles than you”)

During an English grammar class, we had a quiz, and I wrote “Sin-Eater” at the top, as a word doodle, not as a name header or anything. But I forgot to put my name on the quiz.

Hence I was known as a “Sin-Eater” for a brief (two months) time.

In reference to the “knocker-up,” it reminded me of a phrase like it, something also called something like “woman-getters.” I think I learned it from a Victorian novel (not Dickens, but something around that time). They were called “woman-getters,” or something like that–their job was to impregnate women who had received the death sentence, thereby extending her life. It didn’t last very long, though. The women were still executed after the baby was born.
