His explanation was that the French thought that spring fish were particularly foolish and easy to catch and maybe, to some degree, that it was a little silly seeing a fish swim in the opposite direction. I don't know how true it is, but it's always made me laugh. And, since then, I've always tried to hang a fish (picture, not real) somewhere.
