		<description>In 1855 Jefferson Davis, then the US Secretary of War, imported camels as well as trained camel handlers to the American Southwest as an experiment to replace the mules as pack animals, reasoning that the camels would be better able to tolerate the extreme heat and dry conditions.  The experiment was a failure for several reasons, not the least of which was the onset of the civil war, and the advance of the railroads which reduced the need for pack animals of any kind.  The camels were eventually released into the wild to fend for themselves.
