Im pretty sure I have trich. Since as long as I remember I pull out my nose hair. It doesnt hurt at all...in fact it gives me a great sense of achievement. Especially when I pluck more than one at a time. Ive never had any problems from doing this. I sometimes go for the eyebrows too but always head straight for the mirror. What is the name for compulive nose-picking? My mum always thought id grow out of both habits, but at 30 Im thinking its here stay!

@Greg- Your comment made me lol.
All thanks to Arrested Development!
I think the most fascinating mental illness I read about during my time in college was the Dissociative Fugue. Aaahhh, to take a vacation, assume a new identity, and be none the wiser to the troubles I left behind!

As a middle aged woman, starting the beard thing I would love to be so anal about it that I don't find any of those 2 inchers that make me wonder how many folks were too nice to say anything about the really long hair sprouting from my face. of course the pang of embarrassment, when I get the little bugger out. good comments folks, I like the article.

I had trichotillimania issues in middle school. I was 12 and having a horrid time in school and with hormones and depression. Honestly, I was lucky I made it out alive through that period because my parents didn't help qnd I was suicidal through most of it. (yes, I was 12 and suicidal). Anyway, I had acne problems and I'd pull the hair out along my hairline in the front and then the sides under my long hair by my temples. I'd look for the extra inflammation from the pores on the hair follicles. Eventually, after my mom found out (this resulted in anger on her part and no offers of much needed help) I stopped. (I have a bad pic of me with half grown bangs from seventh grade. That just made people make fun of me more.) Now, I really only pick at the occasional chin hair and sometimes my brows if I haven't had time to properly pluck them.

When I am under a lot of stress, I pick at my eyebrows. I have had bald spots in my eyebrows several times over the years (thank God it has always grown back in). It's a problem, and I know it's a problem, but when I'm stressed, I just can't keep myself from doing it. I've never pulled anything but eyebrow hairs, though.

I think I've mentioned it before, but similar to the hair pulling - I can't help but 'twang' my ulnar and tibial nerves. I'm not sure when I started, but I do it pretty much every day. I fantasise about cutting the skin open to directly touch the nerves, but never do for I know that there's a much higher danger of completely destroying the nerves.

Also, I've only ever once found anyone else refer to them doing anything similar - and it seemed to be rather minor. (i.e. no bashing of the nerves with rocks, rolling pins, etc. like me.)

i've got trichotillomania...i pull at my eyebrows constantly. i like the sensation but always regret it because it makes my eyebrows look so sparse. it's hard to stop though since i'm usually not even aware that i'm doing it. definitely compulsive behavior there...
i know they say that trichotillomania is not as common but i'm always shocked to read how many people respond that they've been pulling their eyebrows or eyelashes for the longest time.

A perfect example of Folie a deux is the movie "Bug" (2006). It isn't THE best movie in mt opinion, but it may interest other people who are into this type of stuff. Link to a page about the movie
