Regarding the final peak at Lincoln's body, I just get the image of a group of men (sexist but realistic) prying off the lid, looking in and saying something to the effect of 'yep, that's him'.

What an elite, but strange experience. And here I thought I was a big deal for seeing Lincoln's hat at the Smithsonian!

Sounds like there's a sociology paper waiting to be written about the link between autocratic societies and the penchant for displaying preserved leaders.

He wasn't what you would consider a politician, but Alexander the Great's body was stolen and/or moved around several times for various reasons. The most importantly was the fact that after he died whoever brought his body back to Egypt had a legitimate claim to be Pharoah of Egypt! Look it up it's all quite interesting. God I sound like a nerd. I swear I'm only part nerd.

Love this stuff. My husband and I were talking about the Lincoln-era fad for holding corpses for ransom, and we imagined the conversation that might happen between a corpse-napper and a modern cynical type like ourselves:

Napper: I'm holding the corpse of your beloved hostage. I want ransom.

Us: Or what, I'll never see them alive again???

Them: If you don't pay me, I'll send them to you -- piece by piece.

Us: So if I hold out long enough, I'll get them all back? Okay, but you'll be out postage.

I guess this, plus the stinky goo factor, is why corpse-napping never caught on. It is far more civilized that kidnapping and terrorizing an actual conscious person, though.

When I was visiting Graceland a couple of years ago, they told us that the reason Elvis was was buried in the Meditation Garden was because thieves attempted to steal his body from the local Forest Hill Cemetery. His dad got permission to move the bodies of Elvis and his mom to the estate. There were at least three graves when I visited, including his grandmother.
