It was actually an adult bear. While on the trip, Teddy and his party were not having any luck finding bears. Another group from the same hunting party chased down an adult bear. By the time they caught it, the bear was injured and exhausted. The hunters tied the bear to a tree and brought Teddy over to finish it. Always the sportsman and with his own code of honor, the President refused to do so and asked that someone just put it out of its misery. This act was soon published in a newspaper cartoon. In subsequent retelling of the story in other editorial cartoons, the bear was changed to a cub. This wasn't revealed until shortly before he died. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that this injury was caused by a blow from John L. Sullivan.
