My great-grandmother booked passage on the Titanic to visit relatives in Chicago. Shortly before she was to leave Ireland, her parish priest talked her into delaying her trip because he had a bad feeling about that ship, so she didn't go.

Lifeboat A was the very last collapsible boat to leave the sinking ship that night. It was found one month later, nearly 300 km from where Titanic went down. Three bodies were found inside, their hair bleached from exposure.

Click on my name for the link to an article on the subject from May, 1912.

Most people don't know that back in 1912 Hellman's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the "Titanic" was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York City.

Mexicans were crazy about the stuff.

The Mexican people were eagerly awaiting delivery and were disconsolate("desperados") at the loss. So much so that they declared a national day of mourning which they still observe today.

It is known, of course, as ...sinko de Mayo.

There is a local legend in my home town that the Titanic was supposed to be carrying a marble altar for one of the local churches.

The rest of the altar area is marble except for the altar, which to this day is still a wooden one.

I've been told they decided not to attempt to get another marble altar to honor the souls that died.

More first class men got off the Titanic on lifeboats than third class women and children; the story of the Titanic became a major symbol of class struggle of the times and was used later to highlight the disparities between the rich and the poor, in the way that the poor were literally considered to be of less worth as living beings than the rich.

Sad and disgusting.

Then there's Violet Jessup - who was a stewardess on the Olympic when it had a collision with another ship in 1911.

Then, she transferred to the Titanic... and we know how that ended.

Then, she became a Red Cross nurse, and was on the Britannic during WWI, when it hit a mine and sank off the coast of Greece.
