Your inability to truly write anything positive is staggering. People love to portray Nixon as some monster, but that was not the case.
Who are you to say that he did not care about the environment? LBJ did not care about Civil Rights. He knew it would create a legacy, but it is the legislation that was created that matters.

I read that Nixon dramatically increased the funding for the NEA and the NEH because he hated the avant garde artists of New England. Those artists benefited most from NEA funds before Nixon's administration. Nixon boosted the federal appropriations and made it available nationwide to more grassroots-related arts and humanities projects. For example, if you look at most of the small, local historical societies across the country, most were founded during the 1970s.

He also helped to poison health care by allowing HMO's to proliferate. Michael Moore's Sicko has some interesting snippets of the Nixon tapes on that.

very nice work. i've never read much about him, but have certainly seen him lampooned endlessly. it's nice(?) to know there was a lot of basis in fact.

I prepared myself at the beginning of the article for another republican/Nixon bashing session. I have to say it's great to see a fact sheet on Nixon that doesn't just slander him but actually has interesting facts on his presidency. Kudos Mental floss.

Since I was about 12 at the time of the Watergate hearings, the only thing that bothered me was the fact that my TV shows weren't on.
But I had a HS assignment to send letters to companies and/or famous people to try and get a reply. I sent one to Nixon and got a letter back from him thanking me.
Then about 2 months after that, I got an offer to buy a leather bound, gold embossed copy of his memoirs for $250.00.
I still have his letter though. Not sure if it's his sig or an auto pen.

(and as a side note, the code for the 2 word pass I have to type in to post this comment is "Coward Recognize! lol!!)

I think that is a nice fact about Nixon, that he is the only prez to spend more money on treatment for addiction than punishment. makes him seem more warm and fuzzy inside.
