Petra at the end of the film Jack Nicholson’s character does receive a lobotomy leaving him like a zombie that is why the chief kills him. There is a good book written by Howard Dully called “My Lobotomy”. Howard Dully received a lobotomy by Dr. Freeman at the request of Dully’s step-mother when he was young.

And those trepanners were (are) bonkers. I’ve seen where modern day trepanners do it to their own skulls. I saw a show on television about one woman who trepanned her skull, wrapped a scarf around her head, and went out for lunch at a resturant. As though she’d just clipped her toenails or something…

There’s actually a twofer here: I’ve read that doctors used to stimulate women to orgasm to cure hysteria USING hydrotherapy (i.e., blasting water at the nether regions).

I’ve read the same thing emily, that doctors found that an orgasm (or stimulation) immediately ended the hysteria the woman was suffering from. When doctors around the world were getting tired of doing this by hand someone did indeed create the world’s first vibrator, but purely for medical purposes!
