I had also heard about the invention of the vibrator starting out as a cure for hysteria.
I wonder if medical insurance covered that procedure?

There’s actually a twofer here: I’ve read that doctors used to stimulate women to orgasm to cure hysteria USING hydrotherapy (i.e., blasting water at the nether regions).

I’ve read the same thing emily, that doctors found that an orgasm (or stimulation) immediately ended the hysteria the woman was suffering from. When doctors around the world were getting tired of doing this by hand someone did indeed create the world’s first vibrator, but purely for medical purposes!

The scariest part of this is that these “techniques” were actually practised on real people. It reads more like dystopian science fiction than science.

I have a cousin who once was treated (accidentally) with an insulin-induced coma. Didn’t work though, because when she woke up she was still a dirty whore. It did little to curb her drinking problem, either; guess it’s a good thing they stopped practicing that!

I first heard about Phrenology, of all places, from the movie Men at Work! That’s right, the 80’s(?) movie with Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez as trash men caught up in a murder! Oh the things we learn and how we learn them!
