Actually Owen was killed when his quick release trigger in the line used to lower him failed. He was acting as the "Blue Blazer" A comedy superhero gimmick. The stunt was supposed to be that he would become "entangled" in the line a few feet from the mat, activate the quick release and fall to the mat. When the release gave way he came crashing down, hitting his chest on the top rope. This led to internal bleeding, which killed him. I was not into wrestling at the time, but after seeing older footage after hearing about him he has become one of my favorites.

If you look him up on wikipedia there is an in-depth descripition of his death and the lawsuit that followed from the Hart family against the then WWF.

How could you not include Ayrton Senna's death? He was regarded as the greatest driver who lived, but was tragically killed in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix (which I watched live as it happened).

While other sports deaths were notable, no one death shook the sports world as much as Senna's death did, simply because of his legendary skills that couldn't save him from his destiny.

One note: later the same day after Senna's death, Dale Earnhardt Sr. dedicated his Nascar win to the memory of Ayrton Senna on camera. I'm not certain if many of Earnhardt's fans knew who he was referring to, but Ayrton Senna was the greatest driver who ever competed.

Nothing to have to do with this post...just the fact that I've been bored and playing on this website all day, only to stumble across a girl from my middle school...small world, no?

While it's interesting enough to see the other athletes mentioned in the comments, I give kudos to Andréa for compiling an article that I found both sad and fascinating. There's a wide array of sports listed here... It shows there really is no "safe" sport. (And by the way, I agree with Ira. Earnhart didn't need to be mentioned here.)

Hard to say that one death is more tragic than another, but ones that come to mind are footballers Marc-Vivien Foé and Antonio Puerta, long distance runners Ryan Shay and Steve Prefontaine and rally driver Colin McRae.
