"Sushi began as a way of preserving old fish. Rice farmers in Southeast Asia would pack fish in jars with cooked rice to preserve it. The fermented result tasted more like stinky cheese than like fresh hamachi;"

I lived in Shiga prefecture for five years and "funazushi" (fermented fish, exactly as described) was the specialty there. Not once did I ever get the nerve up to try it (it smelled awful to me), while I happily eat sushi or sashimi, and even managed to gulp down basashi (horse meat sashimi) for the experience, and I LOVE horses.

Just could never manage the "original" version

Wait...I don't get it. They don't want women to handle or touch or prepare the sushi because their body temperature is higher, but they have no problem letting it sit on a live model for oh, I dunno, twenty minutes?

That doesn't sound right.

Best sushi ever - Tokyo One north of Dallas. My mother took me there for my birthday, and I tried the lobster. The chef did the same thing: brought out a live lobster, killed it in front of me and in a matter o fseconds I had a large pile of fresh (still moving!) lobster. I had to eat it ... turns out it was the best lobster I'd ever had, then or since. BTW, Tokyo One doesn't do that any more, but they still have great sushi for a great price. I go there every time I get to Dallas.

When I was pregnant with my first all I wanted was sushi. We were going to our local place at least once a week for my fix because I was a wreck without it. Some people crave chocolate, but me... spicy salmon rolls.

Aaah, we finally get to one of my favorite dishes! Nigiri sushi is by far one of my favorite things to eat. It's such a different flavor and texture from what we normally have here in the states.

My dream vacation is to visit Japan and go to the Tsukiji market to check out the fish and to eat some of the freshest sashimi. I envy you Heather!

My first time trying sushi was in, of all places, New Mexico. And oddly enough, the experience of eating raw fish in a decidedly hot, dry, and land-locked state didn't turn me off of it. I still enjoy it. There's a great place not too far from here that I went to the other day (here being decidedly East Coast and Ocean Accessible).

The only thing which I found to be unpleasant from my first experience is a plum roll, which for some reason I had the idea was supposed to have been sweet and was not so. I might try it again, I might not, but I've decided anything with roe on it is great. (I love the popping texture. mmm...)
