Roller Hockey faded, but it had a predecessor called Roller Polo that was very popular n the early 20th century in New England, New York and the Mid-West. My father used to tell me about going to games in his Connecticut hometown. There's a good Sports Illustrated piece on roller polo at http://bit.ly/9tUCrj. Time for a revival!

Interesting contrast: the USFL started the career of several NFL players, the XFL ended the career of many Arena Football League players. Broken legs seemed to be a rather common injury in that league and some really good players never played again.

The Continental Football League predated these others, back in the early to mid-60s. The Orlando Panthers is the only team I remember.

"Teams competed for the Murphy Cup, which the Anaheim Bullfrogs won twice, cementing their place as the Red Wings of roller hockey."

I know the Wings have had some success lately, but they've got a long way to go (13 Stanley Cups in fact) before they catch the Montreal Canadiens.

What about the expanded CFL in American cities? Memphis MadDogs, Shreveport Pirates, Birmingham Barracudas, Las Vegas Posse, Baltimore Stallions, Sacramento Goldminers and the San Antonio Texans only lasted for ONE season in 1995!

I know it was already mentioned, but how can you leave the USFL off this list? For God's sake, they sued the NFL and won!

...they only received $1 in the settlement, though...
