I can often smell things in my dreams but it is always a scent that reminds me of something very important in my life, usually the way someone very close to me smelled. My little brother always wore Hugo and when I dream of him, I almost always wake up and can smell it. I also smell vanilla in my dreams, quite often. Most of the time the smell is triggered by the dream, but lately I've noticed that a smell in my dream will trigger a dream that is based on memory but that happens when I'm awake all the time, too. I have very long, detailed dreams that feel like a full movie when I wake up. Often they involve murders and I swear I can still smell iron or the smell of gun powder when I wake up. And I remember all most all of my dreams. Every morning, when I go into work, my co-workers come over and want to know what I dreamed about. It's like our own little story time and my sub-conscience is the author. Weird! :)

Today, I had a dream where I was running from dinosaurs in the rain. I could feel the rain cleary. When I ran into a nearby cottage, there were other people with me. A pink dinosaur stuck its head through the door and roared. The roar was incredibly loud. After it left, some people came to collect clothes for donating. For some reason, I went to the basement of my home to search for clothes (not the cottage anymore). Strangly, the basement was made up of the same several rooms that were in another dream I had a long time ago. I went into a bathroom where I thought in my mind that I hadn't found this place for years until now. I sniffed the air and it smelled like the bathroom I was thinking of. In real life though, this bathroom, or the whole basement, wasn't real. I hadn't smelled the bathroom's smell before in my whole life, yet I remembered it in my dream. When I opened a door in the bathroom that led out of hte house, an alarm went off. Just like the dinosaur's roar, I heard it loud and clear. After that, cops came. The next part isn't so interesting though, so I'll skip it. I can still remember some of what I said and what the characters in my dream said. For example, at one point, on of the clothes collectors said, "Oh, I'll pay him soon." My mom then said to me, "Good job!" Another point at the end of my dream, I was in this small area of grass and trees. One man sat in a large chair and a few other people stood around. Farther away, there was a group of people looking frightened. The man in the chair said, "They're all so scared." I walked behind his chair and said, "I'm not afraid." Walking a little farther, I said, "Everyone can be strong, you just have to feel it." I don't know why I said any of that.

There are sometimes smells in my dreams. Usually these smells are closely linked to a person or place that has a significant emotional link. I have often wondered if others also dream smells. Good to know there are others out there.

This was the oddest dream that I was turned around and this guy I used to like was behind me I could see my hair and feel him behind me smelling my hair,I could actually smell the fragrant smell as well it seemed so real to me that I woke up feeling that he was thinking of me.

When I have extremely vivid dreams, they often come true. So, after dreaming twice in one night about my son, I called to warn him to stay away from alcoholic drinks. I told him that in both dreams he had smelled very strongly of alcohol. He asked if I meant that there was something in the room where I was sleeping that smelled like alcohol. Up until that time, I had assumed that everyone has olfactory sensations when they dream. Since then, I have asked a lot of my friends about this. Colors, smells, sounds, actions are always very important components in my dreams. I don't understand why everyone does not have these factors in their dreams.

I had a couple of lucid dreams, where I am having sort of a bad dream, at least a dream I don't like, and become aware that I am dreaming and think to myself: "I am dreaming, this is not actually happening, I know this is a dream." After that I seem to wake up. Funny though, I developed this after a couple of "bad" dreams and thought to myself when I woke up "you know what, that was a bad dream and it wasn't true, everything is alright."
Regarding smelling something in the dream, I don't remember, but I want to believe that I have, for some reason, especially smells that remind me of my childhood. Although, when I am awake, I have smelled something, and brought me back about 20 years back, to places I had not been in a while. Interesting. I had read something like this before, where smells are very important, and if I am not mistaken, smell was, and still is I believe, part of human survival.

I smell and hear things all the time in my dreams. But unlike other people, I never dream of having to use the toilet. When I do need to wake up to go to the bathroom, I just automatically wake up and go to the bathroom. In the middle of a dream I will partially wake up and be like, better get up and go to the bathroom, use the bathroom, and then go back to bed, and usually I am able to get back to the same dream. I have even fallen asleep on the toilet for a few seconds.

When I dreamed of my birthtown and being with family down there, I could smell cigarette smoke, the smell of the air as it is not as clean as where I currently live, and the smell of bus exhaust. All in the same dream. But maybe I am weird compared to some people.

There are times when I remember smelling, tasting or feeling in my dreams. I remember one dream, I picked up a scent of lavender from this pot of stew to feed to the dead (very long, weird and interesting dream). A tasting dream would be when I was eating a piece of apple pie. I'm sure this was a memory that I replaced in my dreams but I was chewing deliciously cinnamon apple pie, crispy too. I can't recall anything at the moment but I also sometimes feeling something in my dream, I think there was one involving some pain.

My dreams are like movie reels that I just float along with. I don't know but I think I am just over sensitive to being there. I'm imaginative so maybe that means that I am to a point that my imagination from my dream is my reality. I don't know but I love dreaming.

I found this post because I was looking for information about smells in dreams. I had my first dream last night where I remember smelling something in the dream. I was sitting at a table with a group of people, and the man sitting next to me leaned over and placed his head on my shoulder. I turned my face into his hair and I was able to smell his shampoo and cologne. I also remember the feel and textures in the dream which is another thing that I am not used to. With the touch, I only remember one other dream where I could feel as strongly as in this dream, and that was one where I was diving off of a waterfall, and I felt the water as I entered it.

I don't smell things so vividly in dreams that I wake up surprised not to smell them anymore, but I do notice various scents in dreams as in real life. Last night, for example, there was a part of my dream where I was complaining about people smoking at the entrance of a restaurant, and I remember smelling the smoke. But did I actually smell it, or was the smell just "understood," as many things in dreams are? That I don't know.
