I think someone already mentioned Papa Smurf, but he had a human friend I believe named Almnabus who was a more powerful wizard.

I also believe the Ghost Rider character Caretaker can also fit the profile. Not the version in the movie, but the comic book incarnation is a definite wizard.

As for wizards who do not meet the profile, Dr. Strange comes to mind, but his mentor the Ancient One fits the traditional stereotype.

How about Dr. Who - mentors many young women, knowledge of time travel and more stuff than I can list, supernatural power to regenerate whenever he's killed, no beard and fights with his wits and a sonic screwdriver.

Vainamoinen from Finnish mythology is a perfect example of this archetype (and possibly a Gandalf precursor). He's a white-bearded wise man who would rather use his magical voice to solve problems than his sword.

RINCEWIND the WIZZARD

MENTORS: Not sure you could say he really mentors anyone, possibly Twoflower if anyone.
KNOWLEDGE: How to run very, very fast.
SUPERNATURAL POWERS:Being able to solve minor problems by turning them into major disasters
WHITE BEARD: In the movie version, yes, but in most other depictions, he's got a beard but it isn't white.
CAN FIGHT: No. Really no. See KNOWLEDGE. But his Luggage can.

There's also the wizard Shazam! from Fawcett/DC comics. He mentored the Marvel Family, had all the knowledge and power of the gods, definitely the white beard, and is quite the powerful fighter.

Coming back to this post (it was a good one!)- what about Getafix in the Asterix comics? I think he fits, just a bit lighter than the rest.

As far as wizardly women go, I would point out Molly Weasley, the Fairy Godmother, Glenda the good witch, and eventually doesn't Leia in Star Wars take up the mentor role to train young Jedi? I think the biggest difference in wizardly women is that they prove that you don't always have to fight with brawn to win. My favorite? Molly Weasley! She is as much a mentor to the trio as Dumbledore, and she kicks ass in the final book!
